Language learning must go beyond the classroom and be applied in our daily lives, so that the language can become a living language. As an early childhood Chinese Language teacher, I encourage and guide my students to actively use their Mother Tongue Language (MTL), so that MTL is integrated into their daily activities. When students are keen on using their MTL, their communication skills will naturally improve.
Ms Liao Sulian is gentle and friendly when interacting with children. By adopting a student-centric approach, she creates a learning environment closely tied to her lesson content and prepares abundant teaching aids to support teaching and learning. She uses authentic contexts to enhance children’s listening and speaking competencies and provides sufficient opportunities for them to experience the joy of learning Chinese.
Lesson content prepared by Ms Liao is age-appropriate and aligned to the life experiences of the children. Ms Liao designs teaching activities with specific themes and language-learning objectives, and executes them in a well-organised manner. She models the language skills before getting the children to practise them through interesting games and contextualised interactive settings. Ms Liao’s lessons cater to children’s different learning needs, therefore she is able to engage them to learn actively.
Other than developing children’s oral skills, Ms Liao also develops children's early reading ability by using picture cards and word cards. She prepares picture cards, word cards and sentence cards, and uses them to display the written form of the language being used, thus invoking children’s interest and awareness of the written word for things commonly seen in their daily lives.
Ms Liao believes that teachers should first understand children’s needs and stage of language development before selecting the appropriate learning content. She especially hopes to learn more in the area of special education so that she would be able to help every child.
Ms Liao is a nurturing and passionate Chinese Language teacher. Her earnest and positive attitude to cultivate children's ability and interest in Chinese Language is deserving of commendation.
