Singapore’s shared goal to preserve the Mother Tongue Languages (MTLs) in their respective communities is a challenging task. In this session, Dr. Wang will propose novel ways to think about the Mother Tongue Language and methods to broaden our expectations about development outcomes. Dr. Wang will share the PLAY framework that she has developed from both theory and practice, and will explain the essential elements of the framework. She will offer concrete examples of fostering children’s interests, motivation, and sense of ownership of, and affiliation with MTL, its culture, and its people. Through PLAYing, she will point out the hidden treasures in the garden of MTL. Children, parents, families, and educators will find joy and surprise in their efforts to cultivate this garden!
