Raising a Bilingual Reader: Top Practical Tips for Parents
Dr. Sabrina Sun He is a research scientist at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore . Her research interests include: 1) Child Mother Tongue Language learning and e-book reading for children, 2) individual differences in early bilingualism, and 3) harmonious bilingual experience. Her research explores how cognition and environment co-shape the developmental rate and route of early bilingualism, and how the bilingual experience influences children’s social-emotional skills and executive function.
Ms Diana Ser has more than 20 years of experience in the media industry, spanning both English and Chinese language media. She started out as an entertainment presenter, before crossing over to newspaper writing in 2000. A firm believer in bilingual education, Ms Diana started a digital platform, Crazy About Chinese, in 2017 to advocate early childhood learning of Mother Tongue Language.
Parents understand that reading lays the foundation for language learning, but to do it effectively in a fun and engaging manner poses a challenge for most parents. This session gives parents tips on nurturing a bilingual reader from 0 to 6 years old on:

- WHAT to do if my Chinese language proficiency is not good enough?
With a special interest in teaching with paper and electronic storybooks, NIE research scientist Dr Sun He will share research-based top tips to get parents started with reading to your child. As a mother of three, bilingual TV presenter Diana will share her own experience and challenges of getting her kids to love the Chinese language.
